The Minerals Council South Africa (MCSA) released a statement following the announced of the new cabinet last week. The council congratulated President Cyril Ramaphosa for appointing a ‘a leaner, more focused cabinet’.

The council also welcomes the appointment of Minister Gwede Mantashe to head up the enhanced mining and energy portfolio. “The mining industry appreciates the appointment of a well-balanced cabinet, reduced in size but with greater focus. The retention of core ministers in key economic functions is a positive signal to the country, and to investors – both at home and abroad,” comments Roger Baxter, Minerals Council CEO.

Going forward, the council is eager to work with the president and his new cabinet to help enable the mining sector to realise its full economic and transformational potential, which can materially help the country achieve the vision of the NDP (National Development Plan).

“The appointment of Minister Mantashe to an enhanced portfolio of minerals and energy is a key signal of the seriousness with which the president is taking the restoration of investor and business confidence in mining and energy. We also appreciate the President Ramaphosa’s focus on achieving a better gender and age balance,” Baxter concludes.
